Job 23:6-12 Will he plead against me with his great power? No; but he would put strength in me. There the righteous might dispute with him; so should I be delivered for ever from my judge. Behold, I go forward, but he is not there; and backward, but I cannot perceive him: On the left hand, where he doth work, but I cannot behold him: he hideth himself on the right hand, that I cannot see him: But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold. My foot hath held his steps, his way have I kept, and not declined. Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.

“Where is God in all of this?” Have you ever heard someone ask that question, or perhaps you have asked it yourself. Job said “Will He plead against me with His great power? No; but He would put strength in me.” In other words; it is not like God did this to me, but you would think that He would help me through this situation. At least He could be there with me! Where is He? It seems like he is nowhere to be found.

I am sure that most of you have read the poem titled “Footprints in the Sand”:

One night I had a dream--
I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord
and across the sky flashed scenes from my life.
For each scene I noticed two sets of footprints,
one belonged to me and the other to the Lord.
When the last scene of my life flashed before me,
I looked back at the footprints in the sand.
I noticed that many times along the path of my life,
there was only one set of footprints.
I also noticed that it happened at the very lowest
and saddest times in my life.
This really bothered me and I questioned the Lord about it.
"Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you,
you would walk with me all the way,
but I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life
there is only one set of footprints.
"I don't understand why in times when I needed you most,
you should leave me."
The Lord replied, "My precious, precious child,
I love you and I would never, never leave you
during your times of trial and suffering.
"When you saw only one set of footprints,
it was then that I carried you."

Mary Stevenson

Job could not see God in his situation, but he knew that God was still working in his life. He knew that if he stayed faithful to God and to His Word, that God would bring him through that trial triumphantly! When you are going through the tough times in your life, and it seem like God is nowhere to be found – stay faithful to Him and His Word, and He will carry you through.
