As you point out, Pastor Mike, today's passage is much deeper than most people think. It is a wonderful verse to take the time to ponder. Let us go to a quiet place with this verse, and invite our hearts and minds to reflect upon the deep meaning that the Holy Spirit wants us to learn. Thank you for giving us a nudge to do just that.

We try to also use the "presence gauge" of Jesus Himself: "Would I do this thing if Jesus was visibly sitting right next to me?" His Spirit is, after all, right here inside of us believers. Another challenging gauge that helps us is: "Would I want to be doing this, if Jesus came back at this very moment to take us to Heaven?" We miss Hawaii and send everyone our aloha from Virginia

Hebrews 10:19-25 Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; And having an high priest over the house of God; Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised ;) And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.In our picture in the calendar for this month we show Caleb, Rachel, and Corin skydiving. I will confess to you that we actually photo-shopped Rachel and Corin’s picture into the photo. Each of them did their jump at different times, however they were not alone. They all jumped in tandem. This was their first jump and they were not ready to do it alone. Cody however, has jumped many times and is qualified and ready to go by himself. Even though he is qualified, he still talks other people into going with him every time he does it.
The Christian life is a lot like skydiving. Sometimes you need someone else to go with you because you can’t do it on your own. I Samuel 23:16 tells us that “Jonathan Saul's son arose, and went to David into the wood, and strengthened his hand in God.” David needed Jonathan to come alongside of him, in tandem, to help him to make a leap of faith in a difficult time in his life. We all need those kinds of people in our lives at some time or another. Sometimes they are there to show us what to do or to help us to do it. Other times they provide moral support. There may even be times when they have to provoke us a little bit so we will take that leap of faith.
At some point we will need to jump out on our own. Later in David’s life the Bible tells us “And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the LORD his God.” He was able to do it on his own because he had had Jonathan in his life to help him when he needed it and to teach him how to do it as well. Who are your tandem instructors and who are you strengthening in the Lord?
