As you point out, Pastor Mike, today's passage is much deeper than most people think. It is a wonderful verse to take the time to ponder. Let us go to a quiet place with this verse, and invite our hearts and minds to reflect upon the deep meaning that the Holy Spirit wants us to learn. Thank you for giving us a nudge to do just that.

We try to also use the "presence gauge" of Jesus Himself: "Would I do this thing if Jesus was visibly sitting right next to me?" His Spirit is, after all, right here inside of us believers. Another challenging gauge that helps us is: "Would I want to be doing this, if Jesus came back at this very moment to take us to Heaven?" We miss Hawaii and send everyone our aloha from Virginia

I John 1:1-10 "What are the things that are necessary to have fellowship with God?"

Fellowship is defined as close association or relationship. In Christian terms this means the mutual acceptance of and submission to the verities of Christian faith. It means sharing in personal knowledge of and heartfelt obedience to God through Jesus Christ. It simply means fellow in one ship. It is therefore important to have fellowship with God to strengthen our relationship and faith with Him and to live an abundant life. Consistent fellowship with God would also result in stronger bond with our fellow believers. One example that I can think of is burning firewood. In the Philippines we use firewood to cook and I noticed that the fire would burn longer and stronger if the firewood is altogether. However, if you remove one wood and set it aside, it would not last long, pretty soon the fire dies down. Same is true in our relationship with God and others. Inconsistency in our walk with Jesus Christ leads to a cold and backslidden heart. We need God in order to grow and we need each other to keep the fire of God burning in our hearts. As I mentioned the last time, if our vertical relationship is good then our horizontal relationship follows.

To maintain a good fellowship with God, we must walk in the light and not darkness v. 7 says "we walk in the light". When we received Christ as our Savior, we no longer live in darkness; our eyes were opened from darkness to light. Acts 26:18 "To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among that which are sanctified by faith that is in me." To walk in darkness means walking in sin on the other hand, to walk in the light means to live free from the bondage of sin. Romans 6:18 "Being made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness." We cannot enjoy a close relationship with God if our lives are characterized by sin. Sin is the darkness that engulfs us and takes us away from God. God is light verse 5 we cannot mix darkness with light; light can overcome darkness if we use it correctly.

To maintain a good fellowship with God, we must confess our sins. We need to be true to the reality of our sinful nature. We must acknowledge that we are sinners and confess our sins to God. We must acknowledge our sins, confess them to God and flee from it so that we can enjoy our life with God. Like Enoch, he walked with God and God blessed him. Furthermore, we must tell the truth and proclaim that Jesus Christ redeemed us from sin. We need to tell others about the truth of heaven and hell so that others will also come to the knowledge of Jesus Christ and experience a close fellowship with Him. Lastly, we must be truthful in our words and actions. To maintain a good fellowship with God and others, we need to tell the truth even if it hurts.

God loves us and longs to fellowship with us, let us therefore forsake and turn from our wicked ways and commit to be faithful and consistent in our fellowship with him through His Words so that we can really experience the awesome power of God. Start today.

Pastor Andy
