As you point out, Pastor Mike, today's passage is much deeper than most people think. It is a wonderful verse to take the time to ponder. Let us go to a quiet place with this verse, and invite our hearts and minds to reflect upon the deep meaning that the Holy Spirit wants us to learn. Thank you for giving us a nudge to do just that.

We try to also use the "presence gauge" of Jesus Himself: "Would I do this thing if Jesus was visibly sitting right next to me?" His Spirit is, after all, right here inside of us believers. Another challenging gauge that helps us is: "Would I want to be doing this, if Jesus came back at this very moment to take us to Heaven?" We miss Hawaii and send everyone our aloha from Virginia

I Corinthians 1:4-17 I thank my God always on your behalf, for the grace of God which is given you by Jesus Christ; That in every thing ye are enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge; Even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you: So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you. Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ. Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius; Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name. And I baptized also the household of Stephanas: besides, I know not whether I baptized any other. For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.

I loved playing basketball in high school. I was never very good and I was just the guy who played tough defense, hustled on every play and could make a couple shots or layups. My coach noticed that and rewarded me with a starting spot in my junior year but being in a small Christian school that wasn’t very hard to do. Looking at our team we were very small and often times teams twice our size would look at us and chuckle. To explain, I played what is known as the 4 spot in basketball. In the NBA the 4 spot is known as the power forward and is typically played by someone between 6’8 to 7’0 tall and I am 5’8 being generous. Fast forward to the end of the season and we ended up winning the championship in a pretty tough league. Our coach would end up telling us that the only reason we had a successful season was because we played together as a team and relied on one another to get the job done. In order for us to have had a successful season and to overcome our opponents we had to play as a team and I believe that principle can carry over to our church in order to be successful.

I believe Paul’s formula for unity within the church is found in verse 10 of our passage which says, “Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.” Paul desired for the church to hold up the Word of God by telling them to speak the same thing. He isn’t telling them to say the same things but to stand and believe in the same things. We must all be striving to grow in Christ and to do what we can to spread the Gospel.

Then Paul writes and that there be no divisions among you. Are there any problems you have with someone else in the church? God cannot work in your life to the fullest if we have a problem with anybody else. Remember Colossians 3:13, “Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.”

Paul than writes, “be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.” We are not all going to agree on everything but God did intend for us to live in harmony. Paul uses the word mind here which refers to our understanding, our agendas, or our wills. Our common goal should be, as a church and as individuals, to glorify the Lord in everything we do.

Are we a united church? Are we a church that works together? Are we a church that shares common goals? Is there a rift between you and another brother or sister? God’s intention is for us is to be together in many aspects of life. Where do you stand in the unity of our church?

Love you all!!!

Pastor Mike
