As you point out, Pastor Mike, today's passage is much deeper than most people think. It is a wonderful verse to take the time to ponder. Let us go to a quiet place with this verse, and invite our hearts and minds to reflect upon the deep meaning that the Holy Spirit wants us to learn. Thank you for giving us a nudge to do just that.

We try to also use the "presence gauge" of Jesus Himself: "Would I do this thing if Jesus was visibly sitting right next to me?" His Spirit is, after all, right here inside of us believers. Another challenging gauge that helps us is: "Would I want to be doing this, if Jesus came back at this very moment to take us to Heaven?" We miss Hawaii and send everyone our aloha from Virginia

II Thessalonians 2:1-9 Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him, That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand. Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God. Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things? And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time. For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders.Our monthly theme song from May of last year was “We are Gathered Together in Thy Name”. The words of the song are:

Social clubs, sports groups, businesses, and many other organizations gather together all the time. What is the difference when a church gathers together? First of all, the Bible tells us that “where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” (Matthew 18:20) Our fellowship is not based on a common interest or activity, but upon a common Savior. We must be sure that the Lord “Jesus himself (is always) in the midst” of us (Luke 24:36).
They also “gathered together, insomuch that there was no room to receive them, no, not so much as about the door: and he preached the word unto them.” (Mark 2:2). It is the Word of God that brings us together and keeps us together. “Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine.” (Acts 2:41-42). Whenever we gather together it should be to share the Word of God, whether it is through preaching or by personal testimony.
Finally, we should not forsake “the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.” The purpose of gathering together is to encourage, challenge and strengthen one another. Who exhorts you and who are you exhorting?
