As you point out, Pastor Mike, today's passage is much deeper than most people think. It is a wonderful verse to take the time to ponder. Let us go to a quiet place with this verse, and invite our hearts and minds to reflect upon the deep meaning that the Holy Spirit wants us to learn. Thank you for giving us a nudge to do just that.

We try to also use the "presence gauge" of Jesus Himself: "Would I do this thing if Jesus was visibly sitting right next to me?" His Spirit is, after all, right here inside of us believers. Another challenging gauge that helps us is: "Would I want to be doing this, if Jesus came back at this very moment to take us to Heaven?" We miss Hawaii and send everyone our aloha from Virginia

Amos 3:1-10 Hear this word that the LORD hath spoken against you, O children of Israel, against the whole family which I brought up from the land of Egypt, saying, You only have I known of all the families of the earth: therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities. Can two walk together, except they be agreed? Will a lion roar in the forest, when he hath no prey? will a young lion cry out of his den, if he have taken nothing? Can a bird fall in a snare upon the earth, where no gin is for him? shall one take up a snare from the earth, and have taken nothing at all? Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the LORD hath not done it? Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets. The lion hath roared, who will not fear? the Lord GOD hath spoken, who can but prophesy? Publish in the palaces at Ashdod, and in the palaces in the land of Egypt, and say, Assemble yourselves upon the mountains of Samaria, and behold the great tumults in the midst thereof, and the oppressed in the midst thereof. For they know not to do right, saith the LORD, who store up violence and robbery in their palaces.

It saddens me whenever I hear stories of someone who was once living for the Lord than somehow does a complete 180. Oftentimes you hear people say how they did not even see it coming or how completely shocked they were, how it just happened over night or how it was a certain event. I do not believe when someone chooses to forsake the Christian life that it is an overnight decision or a certain trial or circumstance but gradual decisions which we see here in our passage.

Here we find God bringing down judgment upon Israel for their sins. He says in verse 2, “You only have I known of all the families of the earth: therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities.” When parents properly discipline their children the intention should not be out of frustration or wrath but rather to teach them between right and wrong and to teach them discipline so that they might grow and learn. God likewise does that for us as part of His family and as His children (Hebrews 12:6-7). Than in verse 3 it says, “Can two walk together, except they be agreed?” Can you be of one mind with something unless you intentionally intend to? The answer is no, you cannot. Whenever we choose to allow sin in our lives it is a conscienceous decision on our part. Once we allow and excuse sin we gradually take bigger steps into it thinking we can control it. Then eventually it all blows up and then you hear the sad, unexpected stories.

What are you allowing into your life and agreeing to walk with? God chastens the ones He loves and He will chasten you. I have been chastened plenty of times in my life and if you ask me I sure would rather be blessed than chastened. What things are we willingly allowing into our lives that are contrary to the Word of God? Can two walk together, except they be agreed? I would have to agree with God on this one, I do not think so.

Love you all!!!

Pastor Mike
