Psalm 133:1-3 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments; As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the LORD commanded the blessing, even life for evermore.
The only difference between being united and untied is where you put the “I”! Unity depends on what I do. Romans 12:18 tells us “If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.” Unity is not waiting for the other person to do something, it is “Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” (Ephesians 4:3) We have to work at having and keeping unity.
Unity is a result of praying for; ”And the LORD turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before.” (Job 42:10) and with; “And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers… Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.” each other.
Unity also comes from spending time together. In Acts 2:46 the Bible tells us that “they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart.” You cannot build unity with those you are not around. “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.” (Hebrews 10:25)
What are you doing to build the unity in your family? In the church? In your friendships? Unity doesn’t just happen; it is the result of making sure “I” am in the right place.
