Psalm 18:46-50 The LORD liveth; and blessed be my rock; and let the God of my salvation be exalted.It is God that avengeth me, and subdueth the people under me.
He delivereth me from mine enemies: yea, thou liftest me up above those that rise up against me: thou hast delivered me from the violent man.
Therefore will I give thanks unto thee, O LORD, among the heathen, and sing praises unto thy name.
Great deliverance giveth he to his king; and sheweth mercy to his anointed, to David, and to his seed for evermore.
This psalm is a royal song of thanksgiving that rehearses God's deliverance of David from all his enemies. This psalm also includes a declaration of David's love and trust in the Lord (verses 1-3). An exposition of the display of God's attributes to those who trust in Him and a concluding word of thanks for Gods deliverance (verses 46-50). The month of March is mission’s month and I would like us to look at these verses as it relates to mission. We do not have enemies like David did but we do have enemies who challenge our faith and belief every time we share the Word of God with them. The above verses give us guidance or an example on how to behave and what our attitude should be towards the people who refuse to believe God. David trusted God and was thankful to him. We too need to trust God and be thankful for missionaries who work day in and day out in the mission field proclaiming the Gospel.
According to Mr. Webster, “therefore” is an adverb that describes makes you do something as a result of. The "therefore" in verse 49 refers to the Gospel to the Gentiles or nations as referred to in Romans 15:9 "And that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy; as it is written, for this cause I will confess to thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy name." The Gentiles needed to believe and trust in the Lord too; the Gospel was not only limited to the Jews. Likewise, as a result of our faith and love for God, it is also our duty as believers and Christians to proclaim the Gospel and teach every nation and every people about the saving grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. We should tell others that Jesus died on the cross to save us from sin. In Romans 5:8 "But God commendeth his love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us”. In addition, let us commit to serve God with our whole being as encouraged by the apostle Paul in Romans 12:1-2 "I beseech you therefore brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy acceptable unto God which is your reasonable service”.
We are also encouraged to give thanks always (verses 46-48). We need to be grateful to God for his grace and mercy as we trust him to provide and direct our paths. Let us fulfill our responsibilities even if it seems like nothing is happening; let us just leave the results to him. As we focus on mission this month, let us pray that God will give us understanding to know his will and the desire to share his words to others even if they do not seem to care. Lastly, we should always be thankful despite the circumstances we are in at the moment.
