Matthew 28:16-20 Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them. And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted. And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
I am very familiar with verses 18-20. I have heard them all of my Christian life. Like many of you, I have memorized them. In fact, I have preached on these verses. That is why it is so easy to miss the context of these verses like I have up until today. Did you notice verse 17? The simple little phrase: “they worshipped him: but some doubted.” That statement encourages me and I hope it encourages you to.
How often have I doubted the Lord even as I worshipped Him? The disciples had spent three years living and walking with Christ, sitting at his feet and hearing every message. They had just experienced the awesome power of the resurrection and now they were with Him again and yet they still doubted. If they doubted, maybe God understands when I doubt. Sometimes we will doubt the very existence of God. Other times we will struggle with whether God has the power to solve my problems. Most often the doubts are not in God or His power, but in ourselves. I am reminded of the father’s cry “Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.”
Perhaps you are struggling with having the faith to give to Missions. Will God provide it as He promised? Maybe it is some other area that you struggle with in your Christian walk and worship. Jesus reminds us that it is by His power and authority that we can do whatever we do in worship and service to Him. We must learn to go even when we doubt.
