As you point out, Pastor Mike, today's passage is much deeper than most people think. It is a wonderful verse to take the time to ponder. Let us go to a quiet place with this verse, and invite our hearts and minds to reflect upon the deep meaning that the Holy Spirit wants us to learn. Thank you for giving us a nudge to do just that.

We try to also use the "presence gauge" of Jesus Himself: "Would I do this thing if Jesus was visibly sitting right next to me?" His Spirit is, after all, right here inside of us believers. Another challenging gauge that helps us is: "Would I want to be doing this, if Jesus came back at this very moment to take us to Heaven?" We miss Hawaii and send everyone our aloha from Virginia

II Corinthians 9:6-12 But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work: (As it is written, He hath dispersed abroad; he hath given to the poor: his righteousness remaineth for ever. Now he that ministereth seed to the sower both minister bread for your food, and multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness;) Being enriched in every thing to all bountifulness, which causeth through us thanksgiving to God. For the administration of this service not only supplieth the want of the saints, but is abundant also by many thanksgivings unto God;

A question you may have asked yourself recently is, “How much should I commit to missions this year?” Our emphasis this month as you look around the church auditorium is missions and it is time to make our commitments but how much should our commitment be? There is no set number and it will be different between each individual and each family. No one will know how much you plan on giving, except maybe your spouse or family, nor will anyone be able to keep you accountable for what you write down because the slips we turn in will be anonymous. So how much do you give? How much do you commit? Our passage here gives us guidelines that I believe will help give each of us a general number for our commitment.

I believe our passage here gives us two key words, bountifully and cheerful. God desires for us as we make our commitments bountifully. In verse 6 or our passage we read, “But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.” God does not want us to commit sparingly or stingily. He does not want our pocket change or our leftovers. God does not need our money either. He is the God who owns the cattle upon a thousand hills. By giving, we give God opportunities to bless us when done in the right motives and we can certainly be assured that we cannot out give God (Malachi 3:10). Do not give God what cost you nothing but rather step out by faith and give sacrificially so that you might test God’s principle of sowing and reaping.

When we determine the amount we are to give make sure it is not done out of guilt or force but rather with a cheerful heart. Verse 7 of our passage says, “Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.” The best gifts I get from Amanda are not the ones she gives me on my birthday or at Christmas time because maybe she feels she has to or because of tradition but the best gifts are the ones that are given out of nowhere and where the motive is just out of love. Those are the best gifts and I believe God has the same idea when we choose to give; that our giving is strictly out of love for the Lord.

When we make our commitments for this year may they be commitments done bountifully and out of a cheerful heart. In giving we may not see the immediate results down here on earth but perhaps when we meet others who have likewise accepted Christ as a result of missionaries we supported. God gives us the opportunity to give and to be blessed but are we going to take Him up on it.

Love you all!!!

Pastor Mike
