As you point out, Pastor Mike, today's passage is much deeper than most people think. It is a wonderful verse to take the time to ponder. Let us go to a quiet place with this verse, and invite our hearts and minds to reflect upon the deep meaning that the Holy Spirit wants us to learn. Thank you for giving us a nudge to do just that.

We try to also use the "presence gauge" of Jesus Himself: "Would I do this thing if Jesus was visibly sitting right next to me?" His Spirit is, after all, right here inside of us believers. Another challenging gauge that helps us is: "Would I want to be doing this, if Jesus came back at this very moment to take us to Heaven?" We miss Hawaii and send everyone our aloha from Virginia

Acts 1:6-11 When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

This past weekend we had our youth conference and our theme was, “Plugging into the Awesome Power of God.” We basically challenged the teenagers at the conference to be in tune with the Holy Spirit and to allow themselves to be plugged into the things of God. I believe almost all of us would agree that we need the Holy Spirit in our lives; to be our strength, to be our guide, to be our Comforter, and for many other reasons but how often do we expect the Holy Spirit to do things in our lives that are not of Him?

Here in our passage we see the Apostles ask Christ, “Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?” The Apostles, just like the Jews, expected Christ in some part to set up and restore the kingdom of Israel at this point but it was not Christ’s time to do so as He says in verse 7. How often in our lives do we expect things from God or for Him to do something that is not of Him or not in His timing? So many times in college I witnessed guys claim something was “of God” and then fall flat on their faces. I believed this happens because we can be so consumed with God’s future will for our lives and be ignoring His present will which Jesus told the Apostles in verse 8, “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

Many of us do not know God’s future plans for ourselves but God’s immediate plan for us is to be witnesses unto me. Instead of being so worked up about the future, which I do believe is important to plan for, let us be more concerned for pressing on in the immediate by sharing the Gospel to others and fulfilling God’s immediate will for all our lives which God does promise the power to do. Do we spend more time planning our retirement or dreaming of our future home than we do sharing the Gospel with others? There is a saying I have heard which in a nutshell summarizes my devotion which goes, “God will not show you your future will until you are following His written will.”

Love you all!!!

Pastor Mike
