Ecclesiastes 7:11-18 Wisdom is good with an inheritance: and by it there is profit to them that see the sun. For wisdom is a defence, and money is a defence: but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it. Consider the work of God: for who can make that straight, which he hath made crooked? In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity consider: God also hath set the one over against the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him. All things have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a just man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his wickedness. Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself? Be not over much wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldest thou die before thy time? It is good that thou shouldest take hold of this; yea, also from this withdraw not thine hand: for he that feareth God shall come forth of them all.

Someone once said; “I have been poor and I have been wealthy, given the choice, I would rather be wealthy!” Solomon starts this proverb by saying that wisdom is good and wisdom with money is even better. I would agree with that statement; given the choice, I would like to have both wisdom and money. Having money does not make you ungodly. The main problem with having money is that we begin to “trust in uncertain riches, (rather than) the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy.” (I Timothy 6:17) That is why Solomon also reminds us that it is wisdom not riches that “giveth life to them that have it”.

The wise man understands that God is good during times of prosperity and God is good during times of poverty. God does not change even when our circumstances do. Wisdom is our most important defense in life. Having wisdom can get us through any problem. Wisdom helps us to remember what God has done in the past and His faithfulness to us in every situation. Wisdom helps us to know what to do in the present situation that we might get through it. Wisdom also helps us to be ready for the future problems that we will face. Proverbs 4:7 tells us that “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.”
