James 1:2-18 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways. Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted: But the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away. For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways. Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. Do not err, my beloved brethren. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
Another word for “trials” is “tests. We have all taken tests in our lives; in school, for our driver’s license, to advance at work, at the doctor’s office. Generally, no one likes taking a test but it is often necessary to have them. There are different reasons that we are given tests and they are the same reasons why we have trials from God.
Tests are sometime given to show you and/or others what you know or do not know. These are diagnostic tests like the SAT you had in school or the ASVAB that you took when coming into the military. God sometimes gives us trial or tests to show us and others what we know and what we do not know yet and what we need to work on. I Corinthians 8:2-3 says “And if any man think that he knoweth any thing, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know. But if any man love God, the same is known of him.”
Other times tests are used to help you to prepare for future greater tests, like a quiz will help you to be ready for a quarterly test and the quarterly test prepares you to pass the final. A good example of this is found in Joseph’s life; “He sent a man before them, even Joseph, who was sold for a servant: Whose feet they hurt with fetters: he was laid in iron: Until the time that his word came: the word of the LORD tried him.” (Psalm 105:17-19)
Some tests are given solely for the purpose of giving a grade. We will receive our report card when we get to Heaven. “Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.” (James 1:12)
Tests can also be used to purify the group or the individual. These tests eliminate all but the best or the most committed, like with Gideon when God narrowed the Army down to just 300 men. Tests also purify us as individuals by forcing us to focus in and make decisions. Job understood this when he said: “But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.” (Job 23:10)
So the next time you go through a trial or a test, ask yourself; “Why am I taking this test?” The sooner you figure that out the sooner you can pass the test and get it over with. I do not want to fail and I do not want to take the course over again.
