As you point out, Pastor Mike, today's passage is much deeper than most people think. It is a wonderful verse to take the time to ponder. Let us go to a quiet place with this verse, and invite our hearts and minds to reflect upon the deep meaning that the Holy Spirit wants us to learn. Thank you for giving us a nudge to do just that.

We try to also use the "presence gauge" of Jesus Himself: "Would I do this thing if Jesus was visibly sitting right next to me?" His Spirit is, after all, right here inside of us believers. Another challenging gauge that helps us is: "Would I want to be doing this, if Jesus came back at this very moment to take us to Heaven?" We miss Hawaii and send everyone our aloha from Virginia

I Peter 4:12-19 Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy. If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified. But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters. Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf. For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God? And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear? Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.

There are things that happen in our lives that we would consider weird, random acts. I can remember playing catch when I was in eighth grade with one of my neighborhood friends named Matt. We were out throwing a baseball back and forth and I can remember reaching back to throw the ball as hard as I could and then after about 5 feet after I threw the ball a bird came swooping through and than pow! Not only that but when I got home that night I was watching Sportscenter on ESPN and it just so happened that Randy Johnson of the Arizona Diamondbacks, a major league pitcher, also hit a bird as he was pitching in a game. Wow! I thought. What a total coincidence. It is not every day you accidently hit a bird while playing catch and then it happens while watching a baseball game. You know that is kind of how we treat things that happen in our lives.

In verse 12 of our passage the Bible says, “Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you.” God’s Word says that we should not consider it strange when things or trials come our way. In other words when trials come our way we should not consider them random, insignificant, perhaps a fluke but a tool that God is using to grow us. Trials are a way God uses in order for us to grow closer to Him according to verse 13, “: But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.” Rather than just going with the flow of the trial and just trusting Him to pull us through it, seek how you can grow and learn through it. Ask yourself what lessons could God want to teach me through this?

Verse 19 of our passage reads, “Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.” When we are suffering in a manner that is pleasing to God we can trust Him through it. He will never fail us or let us go through it alone. God will never put us in a place where He has never been or where He cannot be our guide. All that God allows us to go through is for His pleasure and for our good.

Love you all!

Pastor Mike
