As you point out, Pastor Mike, today's passage is much deeper than most people think. It is a wonderful verse to take the time to ponder. Let us go to a quiet place with this verse, and invite our hearts and minds to reflect upon the deep meaning that the Holy Spirit wants us to learn. Thank you for giving us a nudge to do just that.

We try to also use the "presence gauge" of Jesus Himself: "Would I do this thing if Jesus was visibly sitting right next to me?" His Spirit is, after all, right here inside of us believers. Another challenging gauge that helps us is: "Would I want to be doing this, if Jesus came back at this very moment to take us to Heaven?" We miss Hawaii and send everyone our aloha from Virginia

James 5:7-20 Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain. Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh. Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold, the judge standeth before the door. Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience. Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy. But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation. Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms. Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit. Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him; Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.I am writing this devotion to you from the waiting room at the emergency room of the St. Luke’s Hospital in Meridian, ID. I am ok, but my mom was not feeling well so we brought her in to be checked out. I will let you know how she is doing as soon as I hear something.
Waiting rooms are aptly named. You have to wait to be seen; wait for the doctor; wait to get your tests done and then wait for the results; then you wait for the doctor to come back again and interpret the results; and finally you must wait for them to finish all of the paperwork so that you can be discharged. No wonder they call us patients! You need a lot of patience when you g to the hospital.
I did not come to Idaho so that I could spend my time visiting with my mom in the hospital emergency room, but that is where she ended up so here is where I wait. Afflictions, trials and problems never come at a convenient time. Often we will find ourselves in God’s waiting room then we least expect it. That is why Psalm 27:13-14 reminds us; “I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.” We need to wait on Him until He brings us the answers to our needs.
One thing that makes the waiting easier is to have someone to wait with you. I am glad that I could be there this time to wait with my sister so that she did not have to be alone. It is good to have people that will be there to comfort, encourage and pray with you during the difficult times. That is what God is reminding us to do in James 5:13-18. Make sure you have people in your life to be there for you when you have to spend time waiting on the Lord.
By the way, my mom is doing fine. She came home after spending a night in the hospital. I appreciate those who did pray for her.
