As you point out, Pastor Mike, today's passage is much deeper than most people think. It is a wonderful verse to take the time to ponder. Let us go to a quiet place with this verse, and invite our hearts and minds to reflect upon the deep meaning that the Holy Spirit wants us to learn. Thank you for giving us a nudge to do just that.

We try to also use the "presence gauge" of Jesus Himself: "Would I do this thing if Jesus was visibly sitting right next to me?" His Spirit is, after all, right here inside of us believers. Another challenging gauge that helps us is: "Would I want to be doing this, if Jesus came back at this very moment to take us to Heaven?" We miss Hawaii and send everyone our aloha from Virginia

Ecclesiastes 6:1-12 “There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is common among men: A man to whom God hath given riches, wealth, and honour, so that he desireth, yet God giveth him not power to eat thereof, but a stranger eateth it: this is vanity, and it is an evil disease. If a man beget an hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years be many, and his soul be not filled with good, and also that he have no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he. For he cometh in with vanity, and departeth in darkness, and his name shall be covered with darkness. Moverover he hath not seen the sun, nor known any thing: this hath more rest than the other. Yea, though he live a thousand years twice told, yet hath he seen no good: do not all go to one place? All the labour of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled. For what hath the wise more than the fool?
What hath the poor, that knoweth to walk before the living? Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering to the desire: this is also vanity and vexation of spirit. That which hath been is named already, and it is known that it is man: neither may he contend with him that is mightier than he. Seeing there be many things that increase vanity, what is man the better? For who knoweth what is good for man in this life, all the days of his vain life which he spendeth as a shadow? for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?”

Our text starts out by saying “There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is common among men.” So what is it? Ecclesiastes 5:13 says “There is a sore evil which I have seen under the sun, namely, riches kept for the owners thereof to their hurt.” So we are told that having a lot of money is a bad thing, right? Well, not necessarily true but it is when we love it more than we love God. 1 Timothy 6:10 reads “For the love money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrow.” Many of us suffered when we do not have enough money.
We want to buy stuff that we like but when we do not have money for it we feel like we are going to die. We feel like we are suffering for the Lord because we know we cannot steal money because it is wrong. Is that the kind of suffering you are experiencing right now? I pray that that is not true in your life today.

God knows what is best for each one of us. He tells us in Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” I am glad that I am not rich (although so often I dreamed of being rich) because I do not know if I would be serving God right now if I have a lot of money! I might end up being all over the place doing all kind of sinful stuff. God created each one of us with the idea that we will all serve and glorify Him and so He gave us everything we need. But so many people want to have plenty money that they ended up not going to church and stopped serving God because they are too busy with work. In verse 2 of our text it says “A man to whom God hath given riches, wealth, and honour, so that he wanteth nothing for his soul of that he desireth, yet God giveth him not power to eat thereof, but a stranger eateth it: this is vanity, and it is an evil disease.” There is absolutely nothing wrong with having money but just do not let your money stop you from serving God instead use your money to serve God by supporting His church and the missionaries around the world. Maybe that is why God gives you more money than you need to have! So use it for God’s glory and He will bless you more. But if you do not have much money just rejoice in the Lord and do not let it bother you otherwise you will suffer for the wrong reason.

In Christ,

Pastor Anter
