As you point out, Pastor Mike, today's passage is much deeper than most people think. It is a wonderful verse to take the time to ponder. Let us go to a quiet place with this verse, and invite our hearts and minds to reflect upon the deep meaning that the Holy Spirit wants us to learn. Thank you for giving us a nudge to do just that.

We try to also use the "presence gauge" of Jesus Himself: "Would I do this thing if Jesus was visibly sitting right next to me?" His Spirit is, after all, right here inside of us believers. Another challenging gauge that helps us is: "Would I want to be doing this, if Jesus came back at this very moment to take us to Heaven?" We miss Hawaii and send everyone our aloha from Virginia

II Timothy 2:1-10 Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier. And if a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully. The husbandman that laboureth must be first partaker of the fruits. Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things. Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel: Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound. Therefore I endure all things for the elect's sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.
It is not hard to be a soldier! You just have to be willing to work long hours, be away from your family a lot, endure a tough physical regime and take orders. And that is just during peace-time! The soldier that goes off to Iraq or Afghanistan has to endure all of these things and more. The problem for most of us is that we do not consider ourselves to be on a spiritual battlefield. In fact, many Christians act as if they are civilian observers of the battlefield, watching it from he safety of our homes. We need to take another look and realize that the war has come to us and we had better get active in that battle.
How much do you “endure” for Christ? Do you endure the effort to come to church more than once a week, to read your Bible every day, to spend daily time in prayer, to go soul-winning? These are the “basic-training” of the Christian life. This is where you start, not where you finish. What are some specific things that you are or can endure for Christ?
The soldier going to the battlefield does not take things like his car or flat screen TV with him to the field. There is not necessarily anything wrong with these things, but they would hinder him from doing his job effectively. They would be extra weight for him to carry with him (Hebrews 12:1-2) and be distractions from his duties. “A man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.” (Luke 12:15). We need to examine our lives for those things (it can be people, possessions and positions like our job or a hobby or sport) that are holding us back (not always bad things) and have become distractions from serving the Lord. What is entangling you?

Aloha in Christ,

Pastor Wayne
