As you point out, Pastor Mike, today's passage is much deeper than most people think. It is a wonderful verse to take the time to ponder. Let us go to a quiet place with this verse, and invite our hearts and minds to reflect upon the deep meaning that the Holy Spirit wants us to learn. Thank you for giving us a nudge to do just that.

We try to also use the "presence gauge" of Jesus Himself: "Would I do this thing if Jesus was visibly sitting right next to me?" His Spirit is, after all, right here inside of us believers. Another challenging gauge that helps us is: "Would I want to be doing this, if Jesus came back at this very moment to take us to Heaven?" We miss Hawaii and send everyone our aloha from Virginia

Proverbs 20:18, 24:5-6 Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war.
A wise man is strong; yea, a man of knowledge increaseth strength. For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war: and in multitude of counsellors there is safety.
The war in Afghanistan took a major turn recently. We decided to send in more troops and to change our strategy from one of containment to aggressively pursue the enemy and remove them from the strongholds that they have established in the country. This strategy was decided after long and deliberate consultations with military leaders, political leaders and experts in the field. This is a good example of what these verses are talking about.
You and I may never be called upon to make any decisions about how to conduct a war on a national scale, but we have to make decisions all of the time about whether to go to war in our own lives. The Bible tells us that we should “mightest war a good warfare” (I Timothy 1:18) There are battles that we must fight and we cannot afford to lose and then there are battles that do not need to be fought and are not worth the cost to us or others. We must learn how to choose our battles.
There are battles that we must engage in and we have to win. These are battles against the world, Satan, sin and the flesh. There are also battles that are “of your lusts that war in your members? Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not. Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.” (James 4:1-3) Other battles may be for what we would consider a “righteous” cause but are not the right time or the right place or we may not be the right person to fight this battle.
A question that they used to ask during the Vietnam War was; “Is this hill worth dying on?” I think it is good for us to ask ourselves the question “Is this battle worth fighting?” There are some issues and some problems that do not need to become a battle. The can be resolved peacefully or can be overlooked.
Our passages today challenge us to seek counsel before going to war. Get advice from people who “Have been there and done that.” From those who have more experience or knowledge than you do. From others that are not emotionally involved and can give you dispassionate advice. They can help you to decide whether or not to take on this battle and then how to prepare yourself to win the victory in Christ.

Aloha in Christ,

Pastor Wayne
