As you point out, Pastor Mike, today's passage is much deeper than most people think. It is a wonderful verse to take the time to ponder. Let us go to a quiet place with this verse, and invite our hearts and minds to reflect upon the deep meaning that the Holy Spirit wants us to learn. Thank you for giving us a nudge to do just that.

We try to also use the "presence gauge" of Jesus Himself: "Would I do this thing if Jesus was visibly sitting right next to me?" His Spirit is, after all, right here inside of us believers. Another challenging gauge that helps us is: "Would I want to be doing this, if Jesus came back at this very moment to take us to Heaven?" We miss Hawaii and send everyone our aloha from Virginia

Luke 14:25-35 And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them, If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple. For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it? Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him, Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish. Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand? Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace. So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple. Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned? It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill; but men cast it out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.We are fighting two very unpopular wars; one in Iraq and the other in Afghanistan. They were not unpopular to begin with. When we first started these wars there was a lot of support from both our political leaders and the general public. I think everyone thought we would go in there, clean out all of the terrorists, give the country back to the locals and come home quickly. It did not quite work out that way.
The problem is that most people did not count the costs of these wars in lives, time and money. Now they want to quit before the job is done. The danger is that all of the rest of the world will look at America as quitters when the going gets tough.
Very few things in life are as easy as we first think they will be. Most projects cost more than the original estimate, take longer than anticipated and are usually harder than we expect. This is especially true in the Christian life. It is easy to come forward in church to make a decision; it is a lot harder to implement it. It is important to sit down and make a plan of how you are going to win the battle over sin and the flesh or how you will build up that area in your life. So what plans do you need to make today?
