Galatians 5:1, 13-26 Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.
For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.
For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another.
This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.
Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.
When we accepted Jesus Christ as a Saviour, he did not only save us from eternal damnation but he freed us from the bondage of sin. His salvation set us free from a long list of regulation thus we are saved by grace through faith and not in accordance to the good things we do. However, we as Christians should not use this freedom or liberty from the bondage of sin as an alibi to do whatever we want; rather, let us use it to serve and glorify God. This is not an easy task to do because we are in a battle with the Devil every minute of the day but we can win by the grace of God and keeping a close relationship with Him. I would like to share with you three things that would help us to gain the victory.
1. Keep loving God. I John 4:19 says, “We love him, because he first loved us.” If our love for God were fervent all the times, it would be difficult to go against his will. Your love for him will compel you to do the right thing and be on the right track no matter how many temptation you face. Setting your mind to do right because of this love will give you victory. Matthew 22:37-38 “Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.” John 15:7 says, “If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.” Therefore, we need to keep loving God and abiding in his words.
2. Keep looking unto Jesus. Hebrews 12:2 “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.” We need to pay attention and focus our eyes on Jesus. He knows what is best for us and he knows what is going on in our lives; therefore do not take your eyes off him. Someone once said that if you look around you, you would be distressed, if you look within you, you will be depressed but if you look to Jesus, you will be at rest. He will be there and fight the Devil with us so keep looking to him.
3. Keep living a Holy Life. I Peter 1:16 says, “Because it is written, be ye holy, for I am holy.” Let us remain holy and not be entangled again with the yoke of bondage as mentioned in our text. I Peter 2:16 also says, “As free, and not using your liberty for a cloak of maliciousness, but as servants of God.” We are not perfect but we should be perfecting until the day we meet our Saviour. Learn from your mistakes and forsake them. Commit to live a life that is separated to God and for God.
Brethren, I know that we are weak but by God’s mercy and grace, we can win the battle for the Lord and for righteousness. Let us be humble and ask his help. He has given us liberty and I am sure he will give us the victory. God Bless and keep on the firing line.
