As you point out, Pastor Mike, today's passage is much deeper than most people think. It is a wonderful verse to take the time to ponder. Let us go to a quiet place with this verse, and invite our hearts and minds to reflect upon the deep meaning that the Holy Spirit wants us to learn. Thank you for giving us a nudge to do just that.

We try to also use the "presence gauge" of Jesus Himself: "Would I do this thing if Jesus was visibly sitting right next to me?" His Spirit is, after all, right here inside of us believers. Another challenging gauge that helps us is: "Would I want to be doing this, if Jesus came back at this very moment to take us to Heaven?" We miss Hawaii and send everyone our aloha from Virginia

I Timothy 1:18-20 This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare; Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck: Of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme.

Paul here in our passage is giving Timothy a charge concerning warfare, probably just as a general would give a charge to his troops before entering the battlefield. As the military prepares its troops to be sent out into the battlefield, they are taught discipline, marksmanship, strategy and other important things to keep each soldier from being killed or captured and to complete their mission with success. As the military would provide the proper training for its troops, Paul in our passage is giving Timothy proper training to survive the spiritual battlefield.

In verse 18 the Bible says, “This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare.” Paul is giving Timothy a charge so he mightest war a good warfare. So what did Paul tell Timothy? Well, to find out let us look at the entire chapter to find what Paul told Timothy to get him ready for the battlefield.

Vs. 5 Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned. Whenever we share the Gospel, whenever we teach, whenever we attempt something for Christ we should be filled with and motivated by love.

Vs. 8 But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully. We should never use the teachings of the Bible to ever condemn anyone or to hurt anyone but to bring them closer to Christ. The greatest convictions cause the greatest love to those that are farthest away from Christ.

Vs. 12 And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry. It is God alone who enables us to be in the battle. We should never forget that. The minute we believe in ourselves is the minute we become a casualty.

Vs. 15 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. I do not know who the greatest Christian is, but I know they have not found out yet. Never become more than humble.

It is a battle out there and are you taking heed to the Instructor’s lessons? The minute we become casual about the battle is when we become casualties. Paul was getting Timothy ready for the battle as God wants to get us ready for the battle. He has given us His instructions but will you listen and follow?

Love you all!

Pastor Mike
