As you point out, Pastor Mike, today's passage is much deeper than most people think. It is a wonderful verse to take the time to ponder. Let us go to a quiet place with this verse, and invite our hearts and minds to reflect upon the deep meaning that the Holy Spirit wants us to learn. Thank you for giving us a nudge to do just that.

We try to also use the "presence gauge" of Jesus Himself: "Would I do this thing if Jesus was visibly sitting right next to me?" His Spirit is, after all, right here inside of us believers. Another challenging gauge that helps us is: "Would I want to be doing this, if Jesus came back at this very moment to take us to Heaven?" We miss Hawaii and send everyone our aloha from Virginia

Psalm 127:1-5 Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain. It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep. Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.
I believe that most Christian parents have the desire to raise their kids for God and I think that is a good desire to have. Many people, including myself, made plans and promises at some point in our lives that one day when we have kids we would do everything we possibly could to raise them the way God would have us to. We could not wait to get married so we can have kids. Hey, do not you laugh at me! I know you did the same when you were single. I mean, let us be honest! We all did that, right? And then came the kids. It is like World War III has just begun. The truth is raising children is not an easy task at all. Some parents tried so hard to raise their kids using their own ideas and techniques they ended up losing them to the world.
Our text tells us in verse 1 “EXCEPT THE LORD build the house, they labor in vain that build it:” We may try to do everything we could in our own power to build our families up but without God's help we would just end up doing it in vain because there is just no way we can compete with the world. The world has so much to offer and that is what makes it so hard. We must remember that God gave us our children Psalm 127:3 says “Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD and the fruit of the womb is his reward.” and we need to raise them His way according to His word. “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Proverb 22:6. It is only through His help that we can have success. We need to work very hard at it using God's standards and principles from His word. The harder we tried now to raise our kids for the Lord the farther they will go for the Lord when they grow up. Verse 4 says "As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth." Someone once said "It is better to build boys than mend men" but I want to say it this way "It's better to build children than mend adult." So let us do our best in raising our children up the way God desires us to and follow His plans for our families.

In Christ,

Pastor Anter
