As you point out, Pastor Mike, today's passage is much deeper than most people think. It is a wonderful verse to take the time to ponder. Let us go to a quiet place with this verse, and invite our hearts and minds to reflect upon the deep meaning that the Holy Spirit wants us to learn. Thank you for giving us a nudge to do just that.

We try to also use the "presence gauge" of Jesus Himself: "Would I do this thing if Jesus was visibly sitting right next to me?" His Spirit is, after all, right here inside of us believers. Another challenging gauge that helps us is: "Would I want to be doing this, if Jesus came back at this very moment to take us to Heaven?" We miss Hawaii and send everyone our aloha from Virginia

Rom 8:31-39 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth. Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
In college I had a Business Law professor who had been teaching for years. His old tests had been kept through time and circulated for studying for current test (which he encouraged). All his tests were multiple choice which was my favorite form of test. I had at least a 20% chance of getting each problem right. Through the process of elimination I was confident I had a 60-80% chance of being right. Plus having his old tests who could lose? I felt guilty for studying from his old tests as I felt we had an unfair advantage (I had never studied from old tests previously or since). To my disappointment the first test I received a 45% This was very disappointing having studied hard for this test out of the book and his old tests and I receive the lowest grade I had ever received in college! To my joy he graded on the curve. My 45% on the curve was an A! Yes, he asked many of the same questions as he had in the years past. And yes he had similar answers as he did in the past. But no I did not answer them right. All he would do was change one simple little item that would change the question (or answer completely). One thing I learned quickly in that class was that you best be careful working with a lawyer as the can change one minor word and the whole meaning changes!
As Christians we have the answer sheet, for the test life will send our way. It is called the Bible. Our text starts off by saying “What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us”
Think of it! If we line up with God, who can stand against us? Is this good enough for us? Typically not. Some other events come up and the flesh takes control and we doubt if God will really stand by us in our time of trouble. The Lord shows his commitment in the next verse when he says he spared not his son, why? “ for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?” What is one thing he wants to give us? Victory!
Why then don’t we lean on him? Sometimes we feel that we are too far in trouble, but in VS 35 it says: Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
The point is, nothing can separate us from his love! We must lean on him to guide us! He has given us the answer book!

Love in Christ,

Bro. Jason Clark
