As you point out, Pastor Mike, today's passage is much deeper than most people think. It is a wonderful verse to take the time to ponder. Let us go to a quiet place with this verse, and invite our hearts and minds to reflect upon the deep meaning that the Holy Spirit wants us to learn. Thank you for giving us a nudge to do just that.

We try to also use the "presence gauge" of Jesus Himself: "Would I do this thing if Jesus was visibly sitting right next to me?" His Spirit is, after all, right here inside of us believers. Another challenging gauge that helps us is: "Would I want to be doing this, if Jesus came back at this very moment to take us to Heaven?" We miss Hawaii and send everyone our aloha from Virginia

About Ohana's Daily Devotional

I Corinthians 13:4-8 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
There are four steps that love must take in the end. The first is to “beareth all things”. The word beareth means “to roof over, to cover with silence”. This means we do not focus on what the other person has done that is wrong. A good example of this is found in Genesis 9:23, “And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they saw not their father's nakedness“. These young men choose not to focus on their fathers sin and failure, but to cover it up. I Peter 4:8 tells us “And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.”
The next step is to “believeth all things”. This does not mean to be naïve and to believe whatever they tell you even when their actions speak differently. This is when you have tried to bear all things, but nothing has changed and all you can do is to cry out “with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.” (Mark 9:24) Trusting God even when you cannot trust others.
The third step is to “hopeth all things”. Proverbs 13:12 says that “Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life.” This is when you have tried and tried and tried and nothing changes, but you need to try again because this time you hope it will be different. Our hope must be in the Lord, not in people.
Finally, we must “endureth all things.” We have soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan who have to endure. They want to come home, they want to quit, they do not want to fight anymore, but they have to because their commander-in-chief tells them that they must endure. In II Timothy 2:3 our commander-in-chief tells us “Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.”
How are you “enduring” in your spiritual battles?

Aloha in Christ,

Pastor Wayne
