As you point out, Pastor Mike, today's passage is much deeper than most people think. It is a wonderful verse to take the time to ponder. Let us go to a quiet place with this verse, and invite our hearts and minds to reflect upon the deep meaning that the Holy Spirit wants us to learn. Thank you for giving us a nudge to do just that.

We try to also use the "presence gauge" of Jesus Himself: "Would I do this thing if Jesus was visibly sitting right next to me?" His Spirit is, after all, right here inside of us believers. Another challenging gauge that helps us is: "Would I want to be doing this, if Jesus came back at this very moment to take us to Heaven?" We miss Hawaii and send everyone our aloha from Virginia

About Ohana's Daily Devotional

I Corinthians 9:24-27 Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

I have a treadmill in my house. I have not used it for much lately, except as a place to hang the ironing. It does not do me much good if I do not use it, but I have noticed that even when I do use it, I do not get anywhere. I sweat, I breathe hard, I get tired, and sometimes I even lose weight; but I never get anywhere. When I am all done, I am right back where I started. Exercise is good, but there must be a goal or purpose to what you are doing.

Sometimes I feel the same way in the Christian life. I feel like I am on a spiritual treadmill. I am working hard but I do not seem to be getting anywhere. Galatians 5:25 says “If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.” We need to make progress in our Christian life. I should be farther along today than I was yesterday. We put out a lot of effort, but we just never seem to get anywhere.

We listen to the messages and lessons but our lives do not change. We pray the prayers, but we do not see God working in our lives. We sing the songs but never really praise the Lord. We read book after book, but His Word is not “written in our hearts” (II Corinthians 3:2). We are busy doing, but nothing is changing.

Is God’s Word making a real difference in you? In your marriage? In your family? At work? Get off the treadmill and learn how to “walk in the Spirit” (Galatians 5:16) not just beat the air. Activity does not always equal progress.

Aloha in Christ,

Pastor Wayne
