Psalm 1:1-6 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.
Psalm 1 would have been an excellent memory passage for our M & M’s contest last month (You don’t have to stop memorizing verses just because the contest is over!) There is so much truth and so many blessings in this passage. Verse two tells us that the blessed man delights “in the law of the Lord”. The word delight means “to take pleasure in”. It comes from a root word which means to “incline or to be drawn to”. What are you inclined to go after? What is it that draws you away from everything else?
There are many things that entice me or draw me away. Certain foods will do that. Their smell will draw me or entice me towards them. For some people, it may be sports. They cannot walk by the TV with a game on without sitting down and watching it. For other people, it is TV itself. If it is on they are going to be drawn to watch it. Does the Word of God draw you to read it, hear it, or study it? When you see the “Do Not Reply” for the Ohana Devotional in your “in box,” are you drawn to open it first?
The Bible says that the “Blessed man” delighted in the “law of God”. Did you ever stop and think what the Law is. It is the first five books of the Old Testament – Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy! Genesis is a great book with the Creation account and the stories of the flood and Abraham. Exodus has some exciting battle scenes and the story of how we got the Ten Commandments, but then starting at chapter 21, it gets into those long drawn out lists of the different laws and the details about how the temple was to be constructed. We have all gotten bogged down in the minutia of Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy! I can think of a lot more exciting places in the Bible besides these!
Someone who delights in sports will not just watch the playoffs with LA and Boston playing; he will even watch the Washington Wizards play the Philadelphia 76’s. People that delight in ice cream will eat any flavor, because it is ice cream. Someone who delights in watching TV will watch the dumbest show because it is all that is on. We all have our favorite parts in the Bible. There are certain stories or passages that we like better than others, but the truly blessed man- He just wants to be in the Word whether it is Genesis or Revelation or anywhere in between! What do you delight in?
