As you point out, Pastor Mike, today's passage is much deeper than most people think. It is a wonderful verse to take the time to ponder. Let us go to a quiet place with this verse, and invite our hearts and minds to reflect upon the deep meaning that the Holy Spirit wants us to learn. Thank you for giving us a nudge to do just that.

We try to also use the "presence gauge" of Jesus Himself: "Would I do this thing if Jesus was visibly sitting right next to me?" His Spirit is, after all, right here inside of us believers. Another challenging gauge that helps us is: "Would I want to be doing this, if Jesus came back at this very moment to take us to Heaven?" We miss Hawaii and send everyone our aloha from Virginia

2 Tim 3:14-17- “But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.”

There are consequences to every action. Some are bad...some are worse, and one cannot choose the consequences of his actions. However, some consequences are desirable. One cannot pick his desirable consequences either, but GOD picks them; which means they are far greater than any man could muster up!

CHRIST says to “continue” in the things one has learned (learned from the BIBLE). One does not need to worry himself sick about what he does not know, but much energy and determination ought to be aimed at obeying what is known. When one aims to obey what he does know, he can still continue to learn more and will understand more and more the importance of applying what is learned.

The results of learning and obeying the BIBLE are extravagant because of the superior qualities GOD's WORD possesses. Keeping in mind the qualities of GOD's WORD will help the Christian to have confidence and motivation in learning and applying the BIBLE; 2 Timothy 3:16 mentions a handful of qualities:

1) SCRIPTURE is inspired by GOD (every word of IT!).
2) The BIBLE is profitable for doctrine (teaching, instruction).
3) GOD's WORD is profitable for reproof (a standard to test/prove things by).
4) SCRIPTURE is profitable for correction (restoration to active righteous living).
5) The BIBLE is profitable for instruction in righteousness (IT gives all the education necessary concerning how to live righteously).

When one is learning and obeying the BIBLE, GOD will change him and make him spiritually fit (the idea of “perfect” in 2 Tim 3:17). The spiritually fit Christian will be more and more equipped to do the good works that GOD would have him to do. Also, that Christian will be more focused on doing those works (which to say more simply; is just applying the BIBLE).

The consequence of learning and obeying the BIBLE is becoming who GOD wants every Christian to be.
