As you point out, Pastor Mike, today's passage is much deeper than most people think. It is a wonderful verse to take the time to ponder. Let us go to a quiet place with this verse, and invite our hearts and minds to reflect upon the deep meaning that the Holy Spirit wants us to learn. Thank you for giving us a nudge to do just that.

We try to also use the "presence gauge" of Jesus Himself: "Would I do this thing if Jesus was visibly sitting right next to me?" His Spirit is, after all, right here inside of us believers. Another challenging gauge that helps us is: "Would I want to be doing this, if Jesus came back at this very moment to take us to Heaven?" We miss Hawaii and send everyone our aloha from Virginia

About Ohana's Daily Devotional

II Timothy 4:1-5 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.

Have you ever had an itch that would not go away no matter how much you scratched it? What I particularly hate is the itch that you cannot reach yourself; you need someone else to scratch it for you. “A little lower… lower… lower; no, not that low. Now move to the left. A little more… a little more…no, too much!” They can never seem to get it right.

A good preacher does not scratch the itch for you; he gives you an itch that makes you uncomfortable to the point that you have to find a way to take care of that itch yourself. Scratching an itch does not make it better. In fact, it can often make it worse. There is always a reason for an itch. It is either the result of some outward irritation, such as a bug bite or an injury, or because of an internal problem like a disease. Scratching brings temporary relief, but permanent can only come by curing the disease, healing the hurt or getting rid of the irritant.

A good preacher, like a good doctor, does not have as his primary goal to give you temporary relief. What he desires to do is to help you determine the root of the problem and to solve it. You do not go to the doctor so he can scratch your itch for you. You want him to show you how to get rid of whatever is causing it. Look for the same thing in church that you look for in a good doctor – look for preaching that offers the cure for what ails you!

Aloha in Christ,

Pastor Wayne
