As you point out, Pastor Mike, today's passage is much deeper than most people think. It is a wonderful verse to take the time to ponder. Let us go to a quiet place with this verse, and invite our hearts and minds to reflect upon the deep meaning that the Holy Spirit wants us to learn. Thank you for giving us a nudge to do just that.

We try to also use the "presence gauge" of Jesus Himself: "Would I do this thing if Jesus was visibly sitting right next to me?" His Spirit is, after all, right here inside of us believers. Another challenging gauge that helps us is: "Would I want to be doing this, if Jesus came back at this very moment to take us to Heaven?" We miss Hawaii and send everyone our aloha from Virginia

Psalm 119:9-16 BETH Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word. With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments. Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. Blessed art thou, O LORD: teach me thy statutes. With my lips have I declared all the judgments of thy mouth. I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies, as much as in all riches. I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways. I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word.

Do you remember learning your alphabet in Kindergarten? You learned the letters by associating the sounds in certain words such as “A is for apple, B is for ball, C is for cat, etc.” The word and letter association helped you to learn the alphabet and to remember it. We often use acronyms or acrostics to help us to learn and to remember important things.

An example of this in the Christian life is the word GRACE – God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense. Another example is the name BAPTISTS – Biblical authority, Autonomy of the local church, Priesthood of the believer, Two ordinances, Individual soul liberty, Saved & baptized church membership, Two offices in the church, Separated Christian living (You can listen to my Wednesday night series on Ecclesiology – the study of the church – to learn more about what these mean). Some preachers will also use alliteration in their messages (I do not, because I am not very alliterate). This is where they start every point with the same letter to help you follow the message and to remember it.

God uses this same technique in Psalm 119. Each section begins with a different letter of the Hebrew alphabet. This helped the Jewish children to learn and to memorize these important Scriptures. The section that we are looking at today begins with the Hebrew letter “Beth.” Every verse is about the Word of God and how important it is to us. You may not know the Hebrew alphabet, but you can know the Word of God with your whole heart. Learn it today!

Aloha in Christ,

Pastor Wayne
