Psalm 19:7-14 “The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple. The statues of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward. Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults. Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression. Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.”
The above verses declare the Excellency of the Scriptures. It is of much greater value to us than day or night, than the air we breathe in, or the light of the sun. It shows us how to live and how to have eternal life. As mentioned, the Law of the Lord is perfect; it is perfectly free from corruption. II Timothy 3:16-17 reads, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction of righteousness. That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.”
Let us consider some truths from the verses we read. The testimony of the Lord is sure, undeniably sure, therefore we can rely on it and be confident that it will not deceive us. It is a sure foundation of living comforts and a sure foundation of lasting hopes. It makes us wise unto salvation. 2 Timothy 3:15 “And that from a child thou hast known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make thee wise.” The statutes of the Lord are right, exactly agreeing with the eternal rules and principles of good and evil, that is, with the right reason of man and the right counsels of God. Psalm 119:128 “Therefore I esteem all thy precepts concerning all things to be right; I hate every false way.” The Scripture will set us to righteousness if we receive and submit to it, and because it is right, it rejoices the heart. The law, as we see it in the hands of Christ, gives cause for joy; when it is written in our hearts, it lays a foundation for everlasting joy, by restoring us to our right mind. The commandment of the Lord is pure; it is clear, without darkness; it is clean, without dross and defilement. It is purifying to those that receive and embrace it. It is “enlightening the eyes” as it brings us to a sight and sense of our sin and directs us in the path of righteousness. The fear of the Lord is clean, and it will make us clean if we keep it in our hearts and evidently show it by our lifestyle and practice. John 15:3 “Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.” It will cleanse our way. Psalm 119:9 “Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed thereto according to thy word.” And it endureth for ever; it is everlasting. It is righteous; there is no unrighteousness in any of it.
Brethren, this is just a portion of what the Word of God is and can do. Indeed, the Word of God is far more valuable than all the wealth that you can acquire in this world. If we receive His words by faith, it is sweet to the soul, sweeter than honey and the honeycomb. Worldly pleasures are the delight of sinners, and therefore disgrace the great soul of man; the pleasures of studying the Word of God are the delight of angels, and exalt the soul. Let us therefore prayerfully obey and submit to God’s will and leading in our lives. He knows what is best, and He will never leave us nor forsake us. We must be humble enough to allow God to cleanse us, rebuke us, and correct us by confessing our sins to Him. He has given us His word as a guide let us keep it in our heart, so that we can live a clean life and perform an acceptable service to Him.
