As you point out, Pastor Mike, today's passage is much deeper than most people think. It is a wonderful verse to take the time to ponder. Let us go to a quiet place with this verse, and invite our hearts and minds to reflect upon the deep meaning that the Holy Spirit wants us to learn. Thank you for giving us a nudge to do just that.

We try to also use the "presence gauge" of Jesus Himself: "Would I do this thing if Jesus was visibly sitting right next to me?" His Spirit is, after all, right here inside of us believers. Another challenging gauge that helps us is: "Would I want to be doing this, if Jesus came back at this very moment to take us to Heaven?" We miss Hawaii and send everyone our aloha from Virginia

About Ohana's Daily Devotional

I Timothy 4:7-16 But refuse profane and old wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness. For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come. This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation. For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe. These things command and teach. Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery. Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all. Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.

Getting in shape and building muscles takes a whole lot of work. In preparation for my wedding, I got on the P90X program with my roommates, and man was it a challenge. We had to do this crazy abdominal workout, Plyometrics (jumping on steroids), Yoga, and other various things. It was definitely a lot of work, but the results were worth it. Within a month I had lost about 10 pounds and dropped a few pant sizes; I felt great and could run up and down the basketball court with the teens. It really took a lot of dedication; my roommates and I woke up every morning at 5:30 to work out and stopped going to the Taco Bell drive thru on the way home after work. Getting your body in proper shape takes work and dedication, but when it comes to getting into spiritual shape, why should it be any different?

Verses 7 and 8 of our passage tell us, “But refuse profane and old wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness. For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.” Physical exercise does have its benefits, but compared to spiritual exercise, there is no comparison. The Bible tells us to exercise, or to train ourselves, unto godliness. The goal of our lives is to be molded into the image of Christ. As those who desire muscle need to put the effort in to lift weights, Christians need to lift spiritual weights, so that their muscles can build up. We lift spiritual weights by daily being in the Word of God, memorizing Scripture, praying, sharing our faith, being in church, tithing, and giving.

Verse 15 says, “Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.” You can usually tell when someone is given to physical exercise, and likewise, people will notice a person given to spiritual exercise. Unlike physical exercise, there are no shortcuts (like how body builders can use steroids or other substances) to spiritual growth. It takes work and dedication. Are you putting the work in necessary to grow spiritually? Are you one that sits around spiritually, or are you the one getting up and working that Bible out?

Love you all!

Pastor Mike
