As you point out, Pastor Mike, today's passage is much deeper than most people think. It is a wonderful verse to take the time to ponder. Let us go to a quiet place with this verse, and invite our hearts and minds to reflect upon the deep meaning that the Holy Spirit wants us to learn. Thank you for giving us a nudge to do just that.

We try to also use the "presence gauge" of Jesus Himself: "Would I do this thing if Jesus was visibly sitting right next to me?" His Spirit is, after all, right here inside of us believers. Another challenging gauge that helps us is: "Would I want to be doing this, if Jesus came back at this very moment to take us to Heaven?" We miss Hawaii and send everyone our aloha from Virginia

Hosea 4:1-7 Hear the word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land. By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood. Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away. Yet let no man strive, nor reprove another: for thy people are as they that strive with the priest. Therefore shalt thou fall in the day, and the prophet also shall fall with thee in the night, and I will destroy thy mother. My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children. As they were increased, so they sinned against me: therefore will I change their glory into shame.

We just started a new series in our doctrinal studies on Wednesday night. We are teaching about Pneumatology – the study of the Holy Spirit. As part of this series, we will have a series of lessons on the gifts of the Spirit. I Corinthians 12:1 tells us, “Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.” Yet, the truth is that most Christians do not even know what the gifts are let alone what their personal gift is! If you do not want to be ignorant of the very thing that God tells you not to be ignorant of, then come on Wednesday night. There is even a verse for that; I Corinthians 14:8 – “But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant.”

Too many Christian are “willingly… ignorant” (II Peter 3:5) of things that God says that He “would not have you to be ignorant” (I Thessalonians 4:13) of. So, why are people ignorant? Some people are ignorant because they do not know better. No one has ever taught them and they did not even know what they were ignorant of. Many of our members at Ohana were that way. This is the first church where they have been taught about what they believe and why. A lot of people grew up learning all of the Bible stories, but they never learned the Bible.

Some people use the excuse that “I am not very smart, and that is why I am ignorant. Acts 4:13 says “Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.” There are very few people that are just too dumb to understand the Bible. You may not know all of the fancy theological terms, but you can know and understand your Bible as well as or better than any professor with a bunch of letters behind his name!

Other people are ignorant, because they are lazy. They do not have time to come to church or to read their Bible. They do not want to “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” (II Timothy 2:15), because it is too much work. They are not willing to invest time, effort, or thought to “to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.” (I Timothy 4:13).

Most ignorant people are ignorant, not because of lack of opportunity or ability or even laziness. For many Christians “Ignorance is bliss!” “What I do not know cannot hurt me and if I do not know it, then I am not responsible for it.” Our text today clearly puts that argument to rest. What you do not know can hurt you, your family, your church and your country! Do not reject knowledge, because if you do, God will reject you.

Aloha in Christ,

Pastor Wayne
