As you point out, Pastor Mike, today's passage is much deeper than most people think. It is a wonderful verse to take the time to ponder. Let us go to a quiet place with this verse, and invite our hearts and minds to reflect upon the deep meaning that the Holy Spirit wants us to learn. Thank you for giving us a nudge to do just that.

We try to also use the "presence gauge" of Jesus Himself: "Would I do this thing if Jesus was visibly sitting right next to me?" His Spirit is, after all, right here inside of us believers. Another challenging gauge that helps us is: "Would I want to be doing this, if Jesus came back at this very moment to take us to Heaven?" We miss Hawaii and send everyone our aloha from Virginia

I Thessalonians 4:9-17 But as touching brotherly love ye need not that I write unto you: for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another. And indeed ye do it toward all the brethren which are in all Macedonia: but we beseech you, brethren, that ye increase more and more; And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you; That ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and that ye may have lack of nothing. But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

During my high school and early college years I was not a person given it all to my studies. I have to admit, while some of my college classmates were in their bunks studying for finals, I was out bowling with my buddies. When it came to the end of each semester, I would look at my report card and just put my head down in shame for my poor effort. I had to reevaluate my priorities during my early college years and give myself a heart check. I was wasting God’s time, especially being in Bible College, with goofing off rather than studying subjects that pertained to His Word. Rather it is in Bible College, Sunday school, or Wednesday night, we should be given to the study of God’s Word to further our knowledge of Him.

Paul here in our passage tells the church in Thessalonica to, “increase more and more.” They was a church acknowledged for their love in verse 10 but God wanted more of them. He tells them in verse 11, “And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands.” Was it not enough to God that they showed love? I once heard a preacher say, “Backsliding is anytime we cease to press forward for God.” We should never be content with what we know about God because there is always so much more contained within His Word. The more we know about God and apply it to our lives the closer we will draw to Him. As I in my young marriage learn more about Amanda, I am able to draw closer to her, learn how to better please her, and meet her desires. Likewise, it should be this way for us. As we should always be students of our spouse, we should always be students of God’s Word.

II Timothy 2:15 tells us, “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” God desires that we be diligent to please Him by better knowing His Word. I pray that in our lives we never come to a point where we have completely figured out God. God in His entirety is above our complete comprehension, therefore, we can never stop learning more. Are you studying God? Are you studying His Word? May we be Christians who give our hearts to God’s Word and are never satisfied but always wanting more.

Love you all!

Pastor Mike
