Hebrews 5: 11-14 "Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing. For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil."
I am hard of hearing. My wife says I do not listen, but that is not true (ok, sometimes I do not listen to her). I do find I have to keep asking my wife, and others, to repeat themselves. My hearing is getting worse as I get older. It is frustrating at times, but it also makes for a good excuse. “I am sorry I did not hear you tell me that.”
There are basically four reasons why people do not hear. The first is because they are not there to hear what God has to say. Romans 10:17 says “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” If you do not come to Revival, then you will not hear what God has to say to you. If you do not have devotions, then you will not hear God speaking to you through His Word. Matthew 13:15 tells us the other three reasons we do not hear God; “For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.”
Some people do not hear, because their hearts are “waxed gross” to listening to God. Having a wax build up in your ears is gross. Having a heart that hardened towards God is even worse. Hebrews 3:15 tells us “To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.”
Ears “dull of hearing” means to be “slow to hear” or to be “weighed down.” Sometimes I am slow to hear what someone is saying to me, because I am weighed down with other thoughts and things, and I am not paying attention. We need to give our full attention to God during the preaching and teaching times and while having our devotions. Isaiah 26:3 reminds us that “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.”
Finally, we need to open up our eyes if we want to hear better. You might say that we do not listen with our eyes, we listen with our ears. I have found that my children pay better attention to me when they are looking at me when I talk to them. We need to learn to give God our full attention whenever He is speaking to us. As the old hymn goes; “Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in His wonderful face and the things of earth will grow strangely dim, in the light of His glory and grace.”
