As you point out, Pastor Mike, today's passage is much deeper than most people think. It is a wonderful verse to take the time to ponder. Let us go to a quiet place with this verse, and invite our hearts and minds to reflect upon the deep meaning that the Holy Spirit wants us to learn. Thank you for giving us a nudge to do just that.

We try to also use the "presence gauge" of Jesus Himself: "Would I do this thing if Jesus was visibly sitting right next to me?" His Spirit is, after all, right here inside of us believers. Another challenging gauge that helps us is: "Would I want to be doing this, if Jesus came back at this very moment to take us to Heaven?" We miss Hawaii and send everyone our aloha from Virginia

Proverbs 2:1-9 My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly. He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints. Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path.

Cardio has to be one of the most grueling types of workouts. If you are a runner, it just seems like the same thing over and over; for those that use elliptical machines, it is the same machine forever, and then for bicycling, there is a constant nagging pain (especially going uphill). Cardio is tough and challenging, but consider its rewards; weight loss, a stronger heart and stronger lungs, reduced stress, more energy, and an overall healthier lifestyle. The rewards of cardiovascular exercise are many, but they do not come without work. It would be absurd to perhaps run a mile once a month and expect results; likewise, it would be absurd to every once in a while to spend time in God’s Word and expect growth.

Throughout our passage, we find words used to help us grow in our knowledge of God. We read words and phrases such as; receive, hide my commandments, incline thine ear, apply thine heart, criest after, seekest, and searchest. These words are not easy words to do. The words apply, seekest, and searchest are verbs that take effort. It requires someone to not just open their Bible Sunday morning during the preaching time, but they must also apply effort afterwards to apply the truth in their lives. In order to grow spiritually, we need to memorize Scripture, practice Scripture, and search for passages that apply to a specific need.

You mean spiritual growth takes work? Yes it does. This is enough to shy many people away from it, but consider its many benefits; shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, find the knowledge of God, He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous, he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly, shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path. People usually do not do cardio workouts just to do it, but they do it for the many benefits of it. Everyone desires the benefits of it, but only few are willing to put in the work necessary. Everyone desires the list from our passage above, but are you willing to put the work in necessary? Are you applying yourself to the Word of God? It may take work, but the benefits will far outweigh the effort.

Love you all!

Pastor Mike
