As you point out, Pastor Mike, today's passage is much deeper than most people think. It is a wonderful verse to take the time to ponder. Let us go to a quiet place with this verse, and invite our hearts and minds to reflect upon the deep meaning that the Holy Spirit wants us to learn. Thank you for giving us a nudge to do just that.

We try to also use the "presence gauge" of Jesus Himself: "Would I do this thing if Jesus was visibly sitting right next to me?" His Spirit is, after all, right here inside of us believers. Another challenging gauge that helps us is: "Would I want to be doing this, if Jesus came back at this very moment to take us to Heaven?" We miss Hawaii and send everyone our aloha from Virginia

Revelation 2:1-7 Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write; These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks; I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars: And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name's sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted. Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent. But this thou hast, that thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.

I left my first love a long time ago! Her name was Bobbi. She was the first girl I ever took out on a date, and at the time, I thought I was madly in love with her. Now, Diane is my first love. Maybe not chronologically, but she is my first love positionally. She is first over everything and everybody else in my life, except God.

I hope that you have left your first love; the world. I John 2:15 tells us, “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” God was not out first love, but we are His. “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8) We can make Him first by giving Him the priority in all that we do.

The Ephesians left their first love. I do not think it happened over night. It was little steps of putting people and things before God. It is missing church to watch a game on TV. It is skipping devotions, because you are too busy. It can be doing something because you like it, even though you know that God would not. This is what happened to Demas. In II Timothy 4:10 Paul wrote, “Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world.” People generally do not quit following and serving the Lord overnight; it is a gradual process that happens as we leave our first love.

1. The word first in Revelation 3:4 does not mean first in time, but can be translated as chief or _______________. I Timothy 1:15, I John 4:19

2. What are the “first works” that they needed to do? Revelation 2:2, 4, Ephesians 2:8-10, Philippians 2:12-13, Titus 3:5-8

3. The word “labour” means pain. How would you apply the phrase “No pain, no gain” to the Ephesians? Luke 9:23, I Timothy 4:7-10

4. How can we practice patience in our walk with the Lord? Revelation 2:2-3, Hebrews 12:1-2

5. What does it mean to repent? Revelation 2:4, II Corinthians 7:8-11
